Why We Exist

Friends of La Porte Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization formed to support the City of La Porte Animal Shelter by improving community awareness, increasing local involvement, supporting fundraising efforts, helping attract volunteers, and educating the public about how the shelter works and how it serves animals in our community.

The La Porte Animal Shelter is a vital community resource — one that depends on the commitment and generosity of the people around it. Animals that come through the shelter's doors deserve the best possible care, and the staff who dedicate themselves to that work deserve a community standing behind them.

Friends of La Porte Animal Shelter was organized specifically to be that community presence — a structured, mission-focused organization that channels energy, resources, and goodwill directly toward the shelter and the animals it serves.

What We Do

Our Four Core Focus Areas

Every action we take, every event we host, and every dollar we raise flows through one of these four focus areas — each designed to strengthen the shelter's connection to the La Porte community.

Community Engagement

Animals in the shelter are best served when the whole community knows they're there and feels connected to the cause. We work to engage La Porte residents, animal lovers, and local organizations by creating opportunities for participation, raising awareness about the shelter's work, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the animals in our care.

Community engagement is about more than just spreading the word — it's about building lasting relationships between La Porte residents and their animal shelter, turning casual awareness into active, sustained support.

Fundraising

Shelters require a steady flow of resources to meet the needs of the animals in their care. Friends of La Porte Animal Shelter works to raise funds specifically designated for shelter needs — including food, medical supplies, enrichment items, bedding, and other essential care resources.

Our fundraising efforts are transparent and mission-driven. Every dollar raised through our organization goes toward practical, visible support for the animals at the La Porte Animal Shelter.

Volunteer Support

Volunteers multiply what a shelter can accomplish. We actively recruit community members who want to help directly, and we work to organize volunteer efforts in a way that is meaningful for both the volunteers and the shelter staff.

Whether helping with adoption events, providing socialization for shelter animals, or assisting with shelter projects, volunteers are an invaluable part of the shelter community — and we're committed to growing that group.

Educational Outreach

Public understanding of how animal shelters work — and what they need — is often limited. We are committed to educating La Porte residents about shelter operations, the adoption process, responsible pet ownership, animal welfare best practices, and the many ways individuals can make a difference.

When the community better understands what the shelter does and how it functions, support becomes more intentional, more sustained, and more impactful.
